Enter multiple e-mails separated by comma.

Context

An innovative product for the control of the carambola fruit fly (Bactrocera carambolae), which affects both immature forms of the pest (larvae and pupae) and emerging adults. Product aimed at soil application, which can achieve full mortality (immature pests + adults) at around 87%; an excellent percentage of control in the biological product category.

About the asset

Product based on the conidia of an Amazonian isolate of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (CPAFAP-3.8) aiming at the biological control of the carambola fruit fly (Bactrocera carambolae). The product consists of an aqueous formulation plus adjuvants to optimize the action of the fungus.

Characteristics in comparison with competitors available in the market
1) First bioinsecticide to be proposed in the market for the control of immature forms of the carambola fruit fly in the soil;
2) High potential for the control of adults emerging from treated soil;
3) Product composed of (active) microorganism isolated from Amazonian microbiota that is easy to reproduce and adapted to the environmental conditions of the northern region of Brazil;
4) High level of control in field trials;
5) Possibility of using the same isolate (technological asset) to control other species of fruit flies of economic importance to Brazil;
6) Preliminary formulation that ensures effectiveness in the control of carambola fruit flies;
7) There is no market competition for this product.
Impacts for the production sector and for society
Biological product with recognized effectiveness for the control of the carambola fruit fly, the main quarantine pest for Brazilian fruit farming. It also shows potential to control other species of fruit flies of economic importance to Brazil, notably Anastrepha fraterculus and Ceratitis capitata.

Partnership goals

  • Codevelopment (proof of concept to prototype)
What is expected from the partnership?
Co-development (from proof of concept to prototyping)
An established partnership is expected to develop an appropriate formula to favor the bioinsecticidal action of the product against the carambola fruit fly; in addition, the formula should increase the product's shelf life (storage). In addition, it would include the development of additional testing to prove the efficiency of the product for the control of the fruit fly species Anastrepha fraterculus and Ceratitis capitata.
How will the technology be offered to the production sector?
Co-development of a formula for scale-up in an industrial environment and to enable continuous production for future commercial exploration.
