PAB journal creates section on Digital Agriculture
This month, the Brazilian Journal of Agricultural Research (Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira - PAB) has launched a section on Digital Agriculture in new issues and made room for the dissemination of scientific production in a relatively new area of knowledge with major impact on agriculture's performance, sustainability and productivity.
In 2016, in a lecture at the 4th Forum of Agriculture in South America, the researcher and general head of Embrapa Agricultural Informatics Silvia Massruhá set the scene in the rural world about the so-called Agriculture 4.0, based on digital production, and the challenges that it poses to a modern and globalized agriculture. And it was Embrapa Technological Information and respective External Advisory Council (Conselho Assessor Externo - CAE), of which the researcher Silvia is a member, that identified the relevance of including Digital Agriculture as a section of PAB, in light of the requests from specialists who did not have a renowned periodical in Brazil with a scientific editorial line available to publish their articles.
For the journal publishers, the creation of this space brings PAB closer to new trends in agriculture and represents an important niche for the publishing market. “We understand that this is an opportunity for scientists in this area of knowledge, who can now count on a vehicle where they can expose their ideas and disseminate knowledge resulting from research”, underscores Emilson França de Queiroz, researcher and editor-in-chief of the periodical.
Digital Agriculture can be understood as the scientific advances observed in the field due to the use of agricultural production technologies, like sensors (aerial or terrestrial sensors built in machines, equipment or infrastructure), to collect information and process data - on water, climate, soil, and nutrients, for instance -, which could help anticipating situations and decision-making, either by farmers or public policy makers, ensuring productivity and sustainability in the field.
These are pillars that have guided Embrapa's work in light of challenges that require increasingly faster responses: in the corporation's current research program, there are over 20 projects dedicated to the topic of digital transformation and automation in agriculture.
The new section is going to welcome papers related to agricultural research that address topics such as modelling and simulation; sensor networks; intelligent systems (data mining, neural networks, decision support systems); big data applications; data integration and interoperability; among others. Authors who are interested in submitting to PAB can consult the journal's guidelines and specific criteria (check "Instructions for Authors").
Scientific periodical - The journal PAB is published monthly, and since its inception 52 years ago, it has strengthened its role as vehicle for the dissemination of technical-scientific knowledge, as it has invested in the establishment of a team of its own and adopted new technologies, in order to pptimize publishing workflows, the qualification of articles, and the journal's visibility in the the national and international scientific community.
Theme editions, publication in English, and indexation by SciELO and by the main international databases are important results achieved by the journal. The inclusion of Digital Agriculture in PAB's editions now confirms the journal's attention to this segment's challenges and potential for the future of agriculture.
