In June 2017, the researcher Margareth Simões from Embrapa Soils participated in discussions about the theme Biodiversity for the Future, which took place at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), in Germany. PIK is a research institution that is part of the Albert Einstein Science Park, is devoted to crutial scientific issues in the areas of climate change, climate impacts and sustainable development, and has an important role at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The discussions addressed aspects related to climate change risk management in South America, concepts such as tipping points, resilience in the Amazon rainforest (Brazil and Colombia), Cerrado (Brazil) and Gran Chaco (Argentina), land use dynamics, modelling, and how to identify tipping points and develop strategies to avoid them. The meeting results include the definition of concepts at different local, ecoregional scales, with due observance of the use of socioecological models.

During the meeting, the researcher Margareth presented Embrapa's experience in the development of the indicator of Ecosystem Integrity through the use of satellites in the Amazon. The work allows decision makers to monitor loss of biodiversity in tropical forests, and can establish a relationship with the subsequent assessment of the loss of ecosystem services (e.g.: carbon and water). This methodology in particular facilitates monitoring in regions or countries with low access to field data, since it is based on satellite products freely available.

The meeting resulted in the elaboration of a Memorandum of Understading (MOU) between Embrapa and the renowned German institution for cooperation between both institutions. The discussions for the elaboration of the MOU included the participation of Labex Europe coordinator Pedro Machado, the researcher Kirsten Thonicke representing PIK, and Embrapa Soils researchers Margareth Simões and Rodrigo Ferraz.
