The researcher Margareth Simões, who works at Embrapa Soils, participated in a series of meeting at FAO/Rome about Agriculture, Food Security, and Earth Observation. Margareth was invited as she represents Brazil at JECAM (Joint Experiment of Crop Assessment and Monitoring – www.jecam.org), a community of global satellite monitoring of agriculture, whose goal is to develop approaches and methodologies for monitoring, and develop protocols and best practices for a variety of global agricultural systems.

The events at FAO included a workshop by ESA (European Space Agency) about the technological solution "Sentinel-2 for Agriculture", a newly developed tool that will be made available at no charge for the obtention of sentinel 2 satellite images and the semi-automated generation of maps of crop areas. In Brazil, via Embrapa, the tool will be tested in Mato Grosso state through the GeoABC Project (a France-Brazil, Capes/Cofecub project), coordinated by the researcher Margareth.

During the FAO meeting, Embrapa was asked to compose the GEO (Global Earth Observation) community for the intercomparison of synthetic aperture radar experiments, coordinated by AAFC (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada). Thus Embrapa will start to contribute to the discussions, to the development of methods and protocols concerning agricultural identification and mapping, and to method verification to estimate biophysical performance indicators through radars. Integrating such community will also allow the progress of knowledge for projects about the topic developed by Embrapa in Brazil.
