Start of training for new agricultural attachés

On August 21, the analyst Carlos Alberto de Carvalho visited Brasília, DF, to deliver a lecture for Brazil's newly-appointed agricultural attachés. The lecture was part of their first day of training, an event held by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa) jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE). Carvalho presented a study on land use and occupation in Brazil and explained how the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) provided an overview - with maps and figures - of the contribution from Brazilian farmers to environmental conservation. The civil servants also learned about the work on Agriculture and Environmental Conservation developed by Embrapa Satellite Monitoring.

According to Mapa's information, the attachés are initially going to take office in Argentina, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, China, South Korea, India, Mexico, Russia, Vietnam and Thailand, and can extend their mission to other countries. All in all, the Ministry reports that there will be 25 attachés covering 41 countries by 2019.

The agricultural attachés perform their activities in Brazil's diplomatic representations abroad and are responsible for acting in the interest of Brazilian agribusiness in several countries.

Their first day of training also included the participation of Mapa's executive secretary, Eumar Novacki, and of Embrapa's president, Maurício Lopes.
