A delegation comprising technicians, managers and secretaries of state of the Republic of Mozambique visited Embrapa Cassava and Fruits (Cruz das Almas, BA) on December 8, with a keen interest in cassava cultivation.

They were welcomed by the general head of unit in exercise Carlos Estevão Cardoso, the researchers Alfredo Alves and Marcio Porto, from the International Relations team, and by the manager of the Technology Transfer Sector, Herminio Rocha. The visit was part of the first Brazil and Mozambique Exchange of South-South Cooperation in Family Farming, promoted by the Semear International Program, an initiative by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in partnership with the Pro-poor Value Chain Development Project in the Maputo and Limpopo Corridors (Prosul), supported by IFAD in Mozambique.

According to Fabiana Viterbo, Semear's coordinator, an exchange like that works as knowledge acquisition towards social change. “The intention is to contribute so that the information we have available in Brazil can support other communities, contribute so that our brothers in Africa can absorb it and thus transform their reality". Viterbo also underscored Embrapa Cassava and Fruits' work and importance for farmers. “When one thinks about technology, one soon thinks of Embrapa. Here, today, the relevance and the importance of the role of Embrapa for smallholders, our end target, has been very clear”.

Meanwhile Daniel Mate, Prosul's coordinator, asserted his interest in establishing a partnership with Embrapa. “We could see here a lot of work in terms of research, technology transfer, cassava stem cutting, and distribution of cuttings and seeds to smallholders using highly productive varieties, which has been contributing to increasing family farming productivity. These are very good technologies, to which Prosul and the government of Mozambique can resort to outline a medium to long term partnership with Embrapa Cassava and Fruits”, Mate stated. He believes a new project will be drawn to benefit over a million family farmers with a focus on cassava crops.

Besides Bahia, the delegation also went past the states of Piauí and Pernambuco, and visited family farmer communities, associations and cooperatives. In total, they have gone through 1,200 km.
