Researchers and analysts from Embrapa Acre shared technical-scientific knowledge about Acrean agriculture with 15 family farmers from the Province of Tahuamanu, located in the region of Madre de Dios, in Peru. The event took place on the last 23rd and was part of the Peruvians' travel itinerary in Acre.

In the morning period, the researcher Aureny Lunz introduced them to areas with agroforestry intercropping, clonal coffee and thickets of açaí in the Unit's Experimental Field. Then the researcher José Tadeu Marinho showed the experiments with maize and soybean cultivation in a no-till farming and crop rotation system at the farmer Raiolando de Oliveira's property.

The afternoon was reserved for a session of lectures on themes like conservationist agriculture in family farming, pasture establishment and rehabilitation, and bovine supplementation in pastures, given by the researchers Falberni Costa, Carlos Maurício de Andrade and Maykel Sales, respectively. The Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forestry (ICLFS) network and the augmented reality app about the system were showcased by the analyst Fabiano Estanislau and the researcher José Tadeu Marinho.

For the trip coordinator Alonso Córdova Arrieta, a WWF-Peru technician, learning about successful experiences in Acre's main production chains is going to contribute to having Peruvian farmers develop new land uses. “Acre is very similar to the Tahuamanu region. Such experience can help the elaboration of public policy that aim at reducing deforestation, in line with environmental conservation and agricultural production”, Córdova states.

The Province of Tahuamanu has soil and weather characteristics that are similar to Acre's and borders with Bolivia and Brazil. The main economic activities are forestry, with timber and Brazil nut extraction, ecotourism, livestock and fish farming. “Since we are at an international frontier region, we started receiving requests from neighbouring countries to share the technologies generated by Embrapa”, reports Dorila Gonzaga, the Technology Transfer analyst who coordinated the event.

The visit to Embrapa was the first activity of the Peruvian delegation's agenda.  By January 26, the farmers had learned from the agroindustries Peixes da Amazônia and Dom Porquito's experience, and visited properties with cassava and livestock production. The trip is the fruit of a partnership between Embrapa, WWF, Institute for Climate Change (IMC) and the Federal University of Acre (Ufac).
