Embrapa, along with its partners, is going to hold the 7th International Temperate Rice Conference (ITRC), which will take place in Pelotas, Brazil, February 09-12, 2020 at the Embrapa Temperate Agriculture research center. ITRC is a global initiative dedicated to bringing together temperate rice-growing countries for the discussion, promotion, and advancement of research, technology, and innovation in the field.

Brazil is the ninth largest rice-producing country in the world and the largest rice producer outside Asia. Rice is a staple food in Brazil, and over 70% of the cereal is produced in the Rio Grande do Sul state, which feeds 120 million of Brazilians every day.

The Conference

Following the previous editions (the last one was held in 2017 in Griffith, Australia), ITRC’s 2020 edition will gather world-class rice scientists and other stakeholders from around the globe engaged in the sustainable intensification of rice production in temperate zones.

The 7th ITRC has the main theme ‘Science & Innovation: Feeding a World of 10 Billion People’ which will be discussed in the three panels: Precision breeding techniques, Digital revolution in agriculture and Sustainable intensification of rice production. There is a call for papers is now open, with the deadline for abstracts or full papers submission being November 30th, 2019.

This edition of ITRC will take place in the main building of the Embrapa Temperate Agriculture's headquarters, and at the Lowlands Experimental Station, located in one of the most traditional regions of temperate rice production in Brazil. Besides the local team, researchers from the Embrapa Rice and Beans Research Center and other institutions are assisting in the organization of the 7th ITRC.

The ITRC 2020 is going to be held by Embrapa under an agreement among the International Temperate Rice Conference (ITRC), the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA – Uruguay), and the Southern Brazilian Irrigated Rice Society (Sosbai). The Conference is also sponsored by Corteva; Ricetec; Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply; Granja 4 Irmãos; the Edmundo Gastal Foundation (Fapeg); ExpoArroz and the Federation of Rice Associations of Rio Grande do Sul (Federarroz).

Following the 7th ITRC, participants are more than welcome to attend the 30th Official Opening of the Rice Harvest, one of the largest events of 'harvest opening' in Latin America which is going to be held February 12-14, 2020, at Embrapa's Lowlands Experimental Station, with the theme “Harvesting rice and grains in lowlands: intensification for sustainability.”

Program

The most relevant themes in the rice sector and cutting-edge technologies in rice breeding and production will be discussed during the Conference. The Panel ‘Precision Breeding & New Breeding Techniques’ will have talks on CRISPR-Cas9 genome-editing techniques, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), and QTL-seq-based genome analysis. The Panel ‘Digital Revolution in Agriculture’ will bring talks on digital farms and the future of food production, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), as well as the discussion of the paths to sustainable and intelligent agriculture, from biotechnology to big data. The Panel on ‘Sustainable Intensification of Rice Production’ will bring together regional representatives from North America, Asia, Europe, and South America to discuss and set up the initiatives for sustainable intensification of rice production in temperate zones, as well as the challenges and opportunities in the current and future global scenarios.

Besides the scientific agenda, a one-morning visit to the “Rice Harvest Opening' fair is planned for participants of the 7th ITRC.
