Book shows Embrapa's role in tropical agriculture
The publishing house Metalivros, in partnership with Embrapa, has just launched the book Embrapa in Tropical Agriculture. The publication, which was elaborated by a group of expert journalists, aims at recording the state company's contribution to the development of Brazilian agriculture.
While the book was edited with private funding, it is illustrated with over 180 images from Embrapa's public collection and had over eighty collaborators. It reports the start of the corporation's operations, its current profile and prospective future activities.
“This is a distinct institutional publication that celebrates Embrapa's 50th anniversary in a clever and exciting way”, states Ronaldo Graça Couto, from Metalivros, a publishing house based in São Paulo that produces artistic, cultural, and scientific initiatives in editorial, exhibition and audiovisual segments.
"We chose journalist authors who specialize in agriculture to write it so that the texts would interest both researchers and general audiences who source information from Embrapa", Couto says. After a few months of research, the authors outlined the trajectory, main scientific achievements and repercussions on agribusiness. They also noted the impacts of agricultural science on the lives of Brazilians and of consumers from over 150 countries to which Brazil exports grains, fruits and proteins.
The book has two sections, one focused on the establishment of the institution, and the other depicts a portrait of Embrapa in its fifty years of operation. It comprises 256 pages with illustrations that sum up its advances: fertilizers, crops, livestock, fruit, biochemistry, biogenetics, precision agriculture and the most recent efforts towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendy agriculture.
Partership
Embrapa in Tropical Agriculture was possible through a shared independent communication action that was funded by stakeholders. Embrapa provided institutional support and oversaw all the stages of the project. The joint action resulted in publishing the title in three languages (Portuguese, English and Spanish) at the initial run of 5000 copies.
With a preface by Eliseu Alves, one of Embrapa's founders, the work contains nine chapters that cover the significance of the institution for agricultural research and science in Brazil, a reason for pride among Brazilians and a source of interest for the tropical agricultural sector around the world.
