On December 17, Embrapa and the company Procampo have signed a technical cooperation contract to make the adaptation of BRS cultivars in Uruguay viable. The contract establishes the introduction of cereals with Brazilian genetics for the winter crops wheat and oats.

The agreement aims at the development of a market for Embrapa's genetic products in Uruguay through the assessment of such cultivars' performance, seed production and technology transfer.  Procampo will also be able to commercially explore Embrapa's cultivars that are protected and registered in Uruguay under the terms of the cooperation.

According to Embrapa Products and Market's (Brasília, DF) deputy manager for Markets, Rafael Vivian, the contract will make Embrapa have higher insertion in the international segment of plant genetics and reach consumers in a country where winter crop production is a tradition. "At times like these, times that are difficult for wheat and other winter cereals in Southern Brazil, the agreement opens doors for new joint opportunities and to integrate efforts for the development of high value added cultivars for farmers," he concludes.

Wheat, a target crop in South America
Brazil produces around 6 million tons of weat every crop year, and domestic consumption is estimated at 11 million tons. Thus, wheat imports correspond to 60% national consumption. Uruguay has met part of Brazilian needs for such imports and can supply up to 25% of Brazil's purchase needs.

"It is in this context that Procampo sought Embrapa Wheat, which had already been receiving demands from other companies to test wheat and barley cultivars in Uruguay for the purpose of licensing and recommendations", reports Embrapa Wheat's head of Technology Transfer, Adão Acosta (Passo Fundo, RS). According to him, Uruguay offers an environment that is similar to the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and a history of success with wheat cultivars from other Brazilian breederse. Some experiments developed by Embrapa in Uruguay have shown an average yield of 4,000 kg/ha for wheat cultivars such as BRS Guamirim, BRS Marcante, BRS Parrudo, and BRS Tarumã.

The agreement was signed in the morning of December 17, 2015, in Brasília/DF, at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, with the presence of the general head of Embrapa Wheat, Sergio Roberto Dotto, the general manager of Embrapa Products and Market, Frederico Ozanan Machado Durães, Embrapa's director for Administration and Finance, Vânia Castiglioni and Procampo's director, German Verdier.
