COP 21: Brazilian agriculture seeks higher resilience
Embrapa Soils researcher Joyce Monteiro was part of the Brazilian delegation for the UNFCCC COP 21, which was held in Paris, between November 30 and December 12, 2015.
Monteiro participated in debates at committees aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture alongside the Embrapa scientists Giampaolo Pellegrino and Gustavo Mozzer.
"We advised the professionals from the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations on agriculture. We tried to remove the stigma of 'emission villain' from agriculture, as it is not the main culprit, especially when compared to fossile fuels", Joyce reports. The Brazilian delegation stressed the importance of agriculture and livestock for food and nutritional security.
With regard to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the Paris conference created a powerful mechanism: the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which will annually invest 100 billion dollars in the theme.
"I believe that our focus has to be not only on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also on higher resilience in the agricultural system, and actions such as the Low Carbon Agriculture Plan (Sector Plan on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for the Consolidation of a Low Carbon Economy in Agriculture) pave the way for that", the researcher concludes.
