Açaí Palm Genetic Improvement Strategies for the Fruit Agri-business in the Amazon

Enter multiple e-mails separated by comma.

The last decades' expansion of açaí palm cultivated areas in the Amazon was significantly high, it being the source of new jobs and income opportunities for the local population. Even though, the participation of the açaí fruit in the region's agribusiness is rather inexpressive when compared to the volume of fruit production in Brazil.

The Açaí palm genetic improvement program developed its first cultivar, the BRS Pará, with precociousness and good fruit production during the harvest period. This project aims to offer the possibility of continuous production or during the intercrop period, under upland and floodland conditions. The goal is to evaluate, select and identify açaí genotypes with high levels of pulp, fruit production and anthocyanin, in both periods of harvest and intercrop.

With the participation of UFLA, UFPA and UFRA universities and Northern and Mid-West Embrapa Units, this research proposal will strengthen the research network of açaí palm genetic improvement for the Amazon.
