Sustainable alternatives for income generation in the " Forever Green Extractive Reserve " (Porto de Moz- PA)
The Extractive Reserve (Resex) "Forever Green" was created in 2004, in an area of 1,288,717 hectares in Porto de Moz- PA. The families that live in this reserve survive especially of artisan fishing, of subsistence agriculture and of raising domesticated buffalos. The region's income increase face the lack of technical knowledge and difficulty of direct access to the consumer market as main obstacles, point out locals. This project aims to organize and develop practices inside Resex with the intent to map its area through remote sensing, study the socio-economic situation of the traditional riparian zones habitants, locally adapt and transfer sustainable production technologies, as well as collectively strengthen the practices of buffalo breeding, milking hygiene, cheese production, and crafting of leather and of non-wood based jewelry (biojewelry). Resex will have Demonstration Units that reflect the community's discussed needs, and the professional training will happen with the participation of researchers, technicians and post-graduating students from Embrapa, EMATER, SENAR, Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and Federal Rural University of Amazônia (UFRA). The activities will address the local community through participatory strategic planning. The technology transfer will be based on graphic material printed by Embrapa, as well as the use of alternate media and the "Rural Talk" TV Show. The aimed results are: the rational use of Resex's physical space, environmental protection, higher training and participation in the productive process, and increased value in these products and in the family income. /n
