Study to Diagnose and Characterize Milk's Productive Chain in Western Pará

Dairy Cattle Farming represents one of the most important alternatives to migrating slash-and-burn agriculture in the Amazon, and lately, has been suffering a process of intensification. This activity has presented in the last years significant growth rates in the northern region, being thus one of the greatest in the country although it remains as the region with the smallest aggregate production. However, this evolution is predominantly a result of the increase in the dairy cattle herd and in the attractive investments in milk agri-business, and not too much on the increase in productivity, which remains low, originated generally from a beef cattle herd, which evolutes into dual purpose, with little use of technology./nSocially, dairy cattle farming is predominantly adopted by small producers. Environmentally, however, stockbreeding has been considered the greatest causing agent of Amazonian deforestation, being thus necessary to redefine its models of production./nIn order to adequately plan the sector's public policy and private investments, it is necessary to profoundly understand these productive segments and their socio-economic relationships with the chain's agents. In this context, this present proposal aims to diagnose the dairy cattle productive chain in western Pará, in order to comprehend its specificities in the Amazon, and in order to supply effective conditions to implement changes in these farmers' productive process, and thus bring productivity gains which are socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.
