Summary: The pointers are tools used to measure direct or indirectly the environmental quality and they still supply important information for the planning and the management of industrial processes. Universal pointers do not exist, for this reason the choice presents high degree of subjectivity and difficulty for the companies. The erroneous choice becomes inconsistent the evaluation process, resulting, many times, in the implantation of environment measures of punctual character, detached from the management system. The work had as objective a) to analyze the set of pointers of environment performance, used by companies which develop galvanic activity; b) to propose a set of performance pointers that makes possible to reduce the subjectivity of the choice process. Investigative methodology of survey type was used in the work, using questionnaires, that had been sent to sixty-three companies of Rio Grande do Sul State. The results allowed to identify the existing difficulties, with relation to the definition and the use of pointers of environmental performance. As conclusion, we confirmed that the most part of the companies have few knowledge about the importance of the use of performance indicators, in both cases, for the planning of interventions in the productive process and for the establishment of strategies that provides the continuous improvement in the environment management system.
