Summary: ABSTRACT - The main purpose of the present work was to evaluate the effects of atypical agrometeorological conditions occurring in the fall-winter period (May-July) over coffee typing and cup quality in the Southern Region of Minas Gerais State. Using the water balance model proposed by Thornthwaite & Mather (1955), in a 10-day basis, ground water availability was estimated for Guaxupé and Varginha localities during the year 2004. Based on the obtained results, the fall and winter months (May-July of 2004) were considered atypical, and the occurrence of rainy periods associated to low air temperatures interfered in the phenology of the coffee plants, particularly delaying the maturation phase of the fruits, and therefore hindering the harvest. Besides that, the coffee harvested in the 2004/2005 period in this region was significantly affected by the atypical climatic conditions, prejudicing cup quality and typing as well as the next harvesting period (2005/2006).
