Trap to catch brown stinkbugs in soybeans

Traps with bovine urine are used to capture brown stinkbugs in order to reduce the pest population and consequently reduce damage to plants. These traps are fixed on stakes and placed on the edge or inside the soybean field. Traps must be installed from the initial period of soybean plants development, remaining throughout the crop cycle. In the initial phase of the crop, when the bugs start to enter the soybean crop, the traps have their highest capture efficiency, reducing infestations and subsequent future damage by the pest, which occurs during the pod formation s and grain filling phase. The number of traps distributed in the fields is variable, with one trap usually being placed every 30 to 50 m. As stinkbug attacks can reduce the germination and vigor of the seeds, in seed production areas larger amounts of traps can be used. This pest management technology requires labor, so it is recommended for small areas, especially in the cultivation of organic soybeans, where insecticide cannot be applied. In addition, because organic soybeans are more valued, the use of a control tactic with labor costs ends up being more economically viable. The traps are made using 2 L plastic pet bottles with openings in the middle third of the bottle. A solution of bovine urine + table salt (sodium chloride) is used, in the proportions of 3 L of urine and 500 g of salt, dissolved in 7 L of water. The traps should be periodically inspected to remove the captured insects and replace the solution, which must always be at a maximum level of 2 cm below the openings, avoiding the escape of newly attracted stinkbugs. The openings may also be cut in the upper third of the bottle, thus facilitating the replacement of the solution.
