Resumo: In the context of global warming and climate changes, livestock production systems may be beneficial or prejudicial to the environment considering they can act as sinks or sources of greenhouse gases - GHG. This makes the carbon - C - balance a fundamental tool in the evaluation of these systems. Carbon balance results must be compared with caution due to differences in the calculus methodology and in the range of processes considered for the anthropic emissions and sequestrations of C. Generally, degraded pastures are not able to neutralize GHG emissions by C sequestration in the soil while intensive pasture systems, integrated or not, have the potential to mitigate GHG and neutrale beef C footprint, generating C credits. Integrated systems have an advantage in GHG mitigation because of the C sequestration by the arboreal component.
