Due to the high percentage of food loss and food waste in Brazil, their reduction is a topic that has become increasingly more relevant, around which different stakeholders have gathered to find solutions. The Save Food Brazil network, which was initially driven by the FAO representation in Brazil, the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and Embrapa Food Technology, had a meeting at the end of July, at the FAO Brazil office in Brasília, to outline the path to consolidate their activities. The key supporters of the Network - Alan Bojanic (FAO Brazil), Gustavo Chianca, Murillo Freire (Embrapa), Walter Belik (Unicamp) and Alcione Silva (photo) debated the public launch of the Network on the first half of 2017.

The Network is going to disseminate best practices and initiatives to reduce food loss and waste, and propose initiatives to the public sector, among other activities. The requirement for their success include institutionalization, sustainability, and the inclusion of key agents such as supply centers, research institutions, city councils, food banks, private companies, and national and international non-governmental organizations. In that sense, the participation of federal government bodies related to social development and food and nutritional security was deemed instrumental. The group also discussed the network's governance to include other stakeholders and interested parties. More information on savefoodbrasil.org/.
