An expert in grasses and native pasture conservation ecology, the Australian researcher Louise Gilfedder visited Embrapa Pantanal's Nhumirim farm (Corumbá, MS) on August 9 - 12, 2016. She is a consultant who has worked for the University of Tasmania for over a decade and who also leads projects for the Australian government. Louise was accompanied by the researcher Sandra Aparecida Santos, who also works with ecology and native grassland management.
Sandra reported that they exchanged experiences on research about native grasslands. "She learned about our research in the fields and, at night, we made presentations about the main projects developed in the area", detailed Sandra. Louise traveled to Brazil to visit professor Laura Botelho, in Minas Gerais, and had gone past Peru and Bolivia.
Louise has expertise in the elaboration of technical guides, a topic that interests the Brazilian researcher, who plans to produce a guide on native Pantanal grasslands. Since conditions in Tasmania are quite different from Pantanal's, their partnership is going to start with the joint production of articles in English. Sandra was invited by Louise to visit the university and co-author papers. "She was charmed by Pantanal and observed the native grasslands' complexity and dynamics, which she considered a great challenge", declared Sandra.
Embrapa Pantanal's international partnerships were reported in July in the story "Embrapa Pantanal responds to demands and takes knowledge to other countries", which can be accessed here.
