Embrapa participated with the Bem Diverso Project in the first Fair and Ethical Trade Consultation Forum between the European Union (EU) and Brazil, held on June 21, in Rio de Janeiro. The event aimed at raising awareness, exchanging experiences and identifying new business opportunities between the EU and Brazil, in order to facilitate the trade of fair and ethical products. The forum gathered about 150 EU and Brazilian policy-makers, governmental institutions, national and international businesspeople, and consumer and civil society associations and organizations involved in the sector.
The products from Brazilian biodiversity that were developed by smallholders and forest extraction workers connected to Bem Diverso partner cooperatives and associations were exhibited in a stall for potential Brazilian and European entrepreneurs: bar soap and flour made of babassu mesocarp; ouricury, moriche and pequi oils; and jelly palm fruit beer. Researchers and analysts from the area of technology transfer at Embrapa have been working together with such institutions to add value and improve the quality of products. “During this event, I had the opportunity to establish contact with businesspeople from several Brazilian states as well as Portugal and Spain, who are interested in trading our products”, informed Aparecido Alves de Souza, Financial Director of the Agroextractive Cooperative Grandes Sertões, located in the Northern backlands of Minas Gerais state. The babassu products made by ASSEMA - Association of Settlements in Maranhão State - also drew the attention of participants. ASSEMA's director, Valdenir Muanda, was present at the event, representing rural workers and women babassu breakers from several communities in the middle Mearim river basin, in Maranhão.
The public was also introduced to wild passion fruit oil, purified seed and wholemeal, under the guidance of the researcher Sérgio Cenci, from Embrapa Food Technology. The researcher provides the project with his +10-year experience working in research, development and technology transfer in the passion fruit chain in Rio de Janeiro state, which has included action to reuse waste from processing the fruit.
