Brazil will host discussions on forest research
Scientists from 114 countries submitted abstracts centering around the central theme of the event, Forest Research and Cooperation for Sustainable Development
On this International Day of Forests, the organization of the XXV World Congress of International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO2019) celebrates the submission and approval of more than 4,000 abstracts, which will be presented in oral and poster sessions. A total of 3,200 researchers from 114 countries submitted abstracts. The IUFRO2019 will be held September 29–October 5, 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil. The main theme of the Congress, which is considered the world’s largest forestry research event, will be "Forest Research and Cooperation for Sustainable Development.
The number of proposals far exceeded expectations. Congress organizing committee president Joberto Veloso of the Brazilian Forest Service said that "the quantity and quality of the abstracts received indicate that the Congress will feature high-level discussions, which pleases us very much."
Most abstracts came from the host country, Brazil, followed by the United States, India, Nigeria, China, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Canada, and Japan (see image). "We certainly will have diversity and consequently a very rich exchange of knowledge between participants," added Patricia Povoa de Mattos of Embrapa Florestas, who represented the IUFRO2019 organizing committee on the scientific committee.
The abstracts were selected considering the context of the technical sessions of the Congress, which divide into five strategic themes: "Forests for People,” "Forests and Climate Change,” "Forests and Forest Products for a Greener Future," "Biodiversity, Environmental Services and Invasive Species,” and "Forests and Interaction with the Soil and Water."
