Embrapa participates in debate about food systems by Global Panel
Until October 23, the president of Embrapa, Celso Moretti, will be participating in event promoted by the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, in Windsor, UK. For three days, experts from several parts of the world will be gathered to debate issues related to the realignment of food systems to supply healthy diets for all.
In 2017, when Brazil hosted one of the institution's events for the first time, Embrapa and Global Panel launched the publication “Melhoria da nutrição através do aprimoramento dos ambientes alimentares” - or Improving nutrition through enhanced food environments, in English -, after the Workshop on Food Systems and Diet Quality, held in Brasília, the capital of the country. The document, which makes recommendations about measures that affect food supply dynamics, features data that undercore the effects of malnutrition throughout the world.
The co-president of the Global Panel, John Beddington, highlighted the importance of the presence of Embrapa's president in the discussions that will be held during the meeting. “They are going to be valuable contributions about agricultural innovation, which can further add to our efforts to mobilize international partners that are interested in creating sustainable food systems”, he commented.
Introduced by the Global Panel as the largest agricultural research corporation in Brazil, Embrapa has been deemed fundamental since its inception in 2013 to define the global and regional impact of the institution's work. “Embrapa's support and the appointment of researcher Celso Moretti, the institution's director of research and development, have come at an important moment for the Panel, as it prepares for the publication of the Foresight 2.0 Report in 2020”, he concluded.
For Moretti, the Brazilian experience can contribute with solutions for other nations. “It has been developed through four decades of research aimed at the sustainable production of food, fiber and bionergy in the worl's tropical belt”. The Global Panel gathers annually in Windsor and this year, the meeting includes preparations for Nutrition for Growth in Tokyo, Japan, next year.
