Variety associated with BioFORT network is awarded in international competition
The dissemination of the BRS Amélia biofortified sweet potato in Southern Brazil - a variety that is part of the food biofortification research and technology transfer network coordinated by Embrapa, the BioFORT Network, - took second place in the "Third competition of successful cases of innovations for the adaptation of family farming - 'Agriculture and Nutrition'". It was announced during the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Administrative Council of Fontagro, the contest's organizer, on October 30 in Washington, United States. Four cases were selected in two categories.
The contest aimed at identifying successful technological innovation cases to improve the quality and availability of food. BioFORT's work was in the second category, "National public sector and non-governmental organizations of Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain (LAC)", alongside 50 other experiences. However, the position will be shared with another initiative, due to the extinction of category III, "Regional or international sector that operates in LAC".
The four winning cases will be invited to attend the awards event in Washington to have their achievements recognized. In each category, the selected initiatives will receive funds for researchers, farmers and users who partook in the case; and for the winning organization to strengthen institutional capacity. In addition, the eleven best cases will be included in a publication, which will be distributed internationally in Spanish and English.
Check the winners in each category:
Category I - Farmers’ associations and other private sector organizations that work with LAC producers
- Sembrando la diversidad alimentaria y oportunidades económicas en el páramo colombiano - Paramo Farms SAS (Colombia)
Category II - LAC national public sector and non-governmental organizations.
- Biofortificación enfrenta al hambre oculta en Panamá – IDIAP (Panama)
- Dissemination of BRS Amélia sweet potato cultivar in Southern Brazil – Embrapa (Brazil) (shared second-place)
- Plataforma BioFORT: La ruta nutritiva hacia la mesa de guatemaltecos – ICTA (Guatemala) (shared second-place)
Fontagro
Fontagro is a cooperation mechanism between countries of Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain, which promotes innovation in family farming, competitiveness and food security. It was created in 1998 with the aim of contributing to the sustainable management of natural resources, improved competitiveness and poverty reduction, through the development of technologies and innovations that are relevant for society and its member countries.
There are currently 15 member countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Equator, Spain, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) sponsor the initiative.
BioFORT
The BioFORT Network is the set of projects responsible for food biofortification in Brazil. It aims at reducing malnutrition and ensuring greater food and nutritional security through increased iron, zinc and vitamin A content in the diets of more vulnerable populations - three of the world's largest defficiencies. In Brazil, biofortification consists in the selection and crossing of plants of the same species to generate more nutritional cultivars, with a focus on the breeding of staple foods, such as rice, beans, cowpeas, cassava, sweet potato, maize, squash and wheat.
