Embrapa has just released its first online course in English, entitled “Forest Management, species by species". As it is available for free on the e-Campo platform, the English-language version of the course aims to not only provide training for technicians, students, and legislators, but also broaden the reach of the topic among international audiences. According to Evaldo Muñoz Braz, a researcher at Embrapa Forestry and course instructor, “many countries manage natural forests and are interested in new management protocols to ensure the economic, social and environmental sustainability of their forests.”

According to Aline Branquinho, Supervisor of Technology Transfer in Digital Environments at Embrapa, “this is the first of several courses we are preparing in other languages. It is a way of having the knowledge that Embrapa generates reach more people.”

Sustainable Forest Management
The management of natural forests has been a topic of study for long. In recent years, a new item has been included in the agenda for scientific research: management species-by-species, with the definition of individualized criteria to manage commercial species. “Sustainable forest management (SFM) aims to use forest resources continuously, in renewable terms, without compromising forest regeneration capacity. This means that the forest is maintained and conserved, while its resources are sustainably used,” Braz explains.

According to Patricia Mattos, a researcher at Embrapa Forestry who is another instructor for the course, “SFM addresses concepts like biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and the maintenance of environmental services provided by forests".

The course has been structured into four modules, totalling a workload of 8 hours: Forest Management Legislation (concepts and legislation); Misinterpretations; Growth; and Procedures and Variables for Management by Species. Each module includes video lessons, a workbook, and an assessment. Participants who score at least 70% or more in the average of the assessments earn a certificate, which is issued within the platform.

The course is available on the e-Campo platform both in Portuguese and with English subtitles.
