This project is a result of the demands made by the farmers from the Rio Capim Pole (the counties of Irituia, Concórdia do Pará, Mãe-do-Rio and São Domingos do Capim), which are involved in fish farming. This pole is characterized by the existence of group actions done by farmers and local institutions, which have the goal to strengthen the balance between family farming and environmental preservation (agroecology), the fish farming being part of this context as an expanding productive system. Thus, the producers are searching for new ways to increment the fish farming production and to conform this activity to the local agroecological practices. FANEP (Foundation for the Socioenvironmental Development of Pará's Northeast) along with COORDESUS (Service Provision Cooperative in Support of the Sustainable Rural Development) currently are involved in various actions to promote the sustainable development of the Rio Capim Pole, and, in the scope of these actions, this proposal is considered a Research and Development project with the aim to support the development of this territory, with specific actions regarding fish farming. For such a purpose, a network of referential productive units will be set up (Zoby et al., 2003), and it will be the way to create local references (technical, economical, social) centered in fish farming, which, in its turn, will ground the dialog between the knowledge of the farmers, the technicians and the researchers, and thus allow the choice and adaptation of the best suited technologies as a function of market conditions, helping even in the guidance of future researches which aim to develop related technologies. Four plans of action will be executed. PA-01 will support the adoption of technologies by the farmers by means of knowledge exchange and in locus experimenting within the network of referential productive units, with participatory methods. PA-02 will support the network: it will generate information to allow the adaptation of existing technologies to the local agroecological practices. PA-03 will support the actions of social organization and management of association, respecting the pre-existent structure, especially regarding fish farming. PA-04 aims to reinforce the compliance of goals and deadlines defined by the project. With these plans, and with the union between the actions promoting the strengthening of the social organization, the access to credit and to the market, the training and socializing practices of the agroecological technology in use in the entire territory, the goal is to validate in this study field, not only technologies, but also the method proposal of building local references, creating a process of information circulation, of reflection and socialization of knowledge between the farmers and the technical help. Hence, this project hopes to contribute to the sustainable development of the Rio do Capim Pole.
