Genetic Improvement of Platonia insignis, Myrciaria dubia, Byrsonima crassifolia and Spondias mombin in the Brazilian North and Northeast
Brazilian native fruit species are excellent generators of income and job opportunities to family farmers and micro-entrepreneurs especially from the Northern and Northeastern regions of Brazil. Species such as the Platonia insignis, Myrciaria dubia, Byrsonima crassifolia and the Spondia mombin L. have been frequently cited as economically promising in the field of family farming, due to the myriad of business possibilities linked to the ever increasing demand of its fruits in the markets of the region. The cultivation of these species represents a form of productive diversification, an important necessity in the market of fruit pulp production, whose competitiveness depends on the variety of products available in the market. The productive arrangement of these native fruit species is very dynamic regarding its development potential. However, to incorporate new fruit species into the productive process it is of utmost importance to make available productive cultivars with efficient proliferation methods. It is important to highlight that currently, none of the region's nurseries produce seedlings of the species cited in this article, simply because there still isn't an efficient technique of dissemination of these species. This project aims to generate knowledge and technologies which favor the productivity increase of the rural producer through selection and disclosure of relevant genotypes for use in agriculture, and optimize propagation methods for the Platonia insignis, Byrsonima crassifolia and the Spondia mombin L. The adoption of this project's findings will lead to a better use of natural resources and to an improvement in the quality of life of rural populations, a fact which might be observed through the diversification in agricultural exploration, in the consumption of nutritious products, especially in minerals and vitamins, which will complement the energetic and caloric traditional diet, asides from offering a source of income and accumulation.
