Amazalert was an international research project coordinated by the Alterra Institute at Wageningen University (Netherlands). Embrapa participated in the development of an Early Warning System for detecting signs of large-scale degradation of the Amazon forest, to anticipate impacts caused by climate change and deforestation. The team of scientists featured researchers from 14 research institutions in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Bolivia and Colombia. Multidisciplinary knowledge about climate and land use and land cover changes were integrated, and impact scenarios for the Amazon region were predicted, suggesting strategies and generating information on the sustainability of policies for agriculture, forest, energy and water in that region. Embrapa Satellite Monitoring worked on the identification of actors related to the project's theme, as well as on the analysis of policies and scenarios based on the distinct social, economic, and environmental values of the Amazon forest. The project’s objective was to aid in the decision making of public policies for the Amazon region, to reduce the impacts of global climatic changes to the forest's conservation.
