Development of jalapeño pepper cultivars for mechanized harvest and of other chile peppers for processing
Development of jalapeño pepper cultivars for mechanized harvest and of other chile peppers for processing
The manual harvest of pepper fruits is difficult mostly due to the plants' low heights and the fruit's pungency, which causes irritation and burns the hands of harvesters. Such aspects partly explain the scarcity of labor for the pepper harvest. In addition, in the Brazilian and international market there are no jalapeño cultivars developed for mechanized harvesting. Therefore, this project aims at the development of new jalapeño cultivars adapted to mechanized harvest - with suitable plant architecture and size, good agronomic and industrial traits - and of other peppers for industrial processing. The study also aimed at the establishment of suitable crop management for the BRS Sarakura cultivar, developed by Embrapa, and for jalapeño lineages that allow the use of harvest machinery.
