This project (conducted as part of a CNPq initiative) is meant to help mitigate drought, energyshortages, and food insecurity among small producers on the coast of Paraná state. The studyfocuses on agroforestry systems incorporating peach palm trees selected for greaterproduction and utilizing byproducts to produce functional foods, energy, and new materials. To do so, a Technological Reference Unit (URT) with an agroforestry system utilizing peachpalms will be established. This unit will apply and demonstrate management techniques suitedto the region and genetic improvement measures for increased productivity and reducedwater demand. In addition to producing palm hearts, the concepts of the circular economy, biorefinery, and green chemistry will be utilized with agroforestry byproducts, particularlypalm bark. The aim is to promote energy security by using agroforestry waste to generate heatand electricity, promote food security by developing functional foods and growing edible fungiin the agroforestry wastes, and reduce poverty by developing new composite materials andadding value by design with agroforestry byproducts. The project will also monitor waterquality in the agroforestry system and the carbon content in the soil for three years. Varioussocial technologies will be developed and transferred, such as composting, generating heatand electricity from waste, solar dryers, gasification to generate electricity, mushroomproduction with peach palm waste, producing composites for crafts, producing packaging, andpromoting the culinary uses of palm hearts. Field days and courses will be held for ruralproducers.
