Water´s storage and management are a great challenge for the scarce rural population that inhabits the brazilian semiárido. The adoption of hydric social technologies to produce drinkable water for both human and animal and the food production contributed with a better life quality for the region´s families. The underground dam is one of the technologies that has helped many poor families, producing food and giving back their dignity. However, due to the enormous soil diversity in the semiárido, the ideal location for the underground dams must be better identified based on the environmental configurations. A undergound dam is one of the main technological alternatives for the food production in government programs such as ‘Water for everybody’, and also from the civil Society, like the P1+2 Program (One Land Two Waters), wich is organized by ASA Brasil. The soil identification after building the underground dams based on environmental indicators (soil and geology) it´s importante for the survival of the familiar based agroecosystems and for the success of programs wich allow survival in the semiárido. The ZonBarragem Project aims to boost the storage and water catchment of the water provided by the rain by mapping the ideal spot for the settlement of the underground dams in family agricuture regions in the Agreste and sertão of Alagoas´ state, allowing the authorities to make the best decisions concerning the social and productive insertion of agroecosystems based on small production farmers. Mapping the 38 cities that compose the Alagoas´ semiárido uses the agroecological zoning of the state (ZAAL), with information provided by the state and cities, on planning the ocupation of more adequate spots for building the underground dams in an integrated way with the land vocation.
