Development and evaluation of sustainability models for tobacco-producing properties in southern Brazil

Enter multiple e-mails separated by comma.

The tobacco production in southern Brazil is an activity of great economic and social relevance and is strongly linked to the context of family farming. Although this activity is recognized for its economic relevance, there are opportunities for the incorporation of knowledge and good agricultural practices (GAP) that contribute to increase the sustainability of the tobacco producing property. For this reason, efforts have been made in many producing countries in order to guarantee the well-being of integrated farmers, qualify production processes from the field to the industry and ensure that tobacco production takes place in a context of environmental quality, offering environmental and ecosystem services with sustainability. In this context, the project aims to subsidize the elaboration of a conceptual model of sustainable producing tobacco property in family farmers linked to Philip Morris Brasil, a partner of the project initiative, in the states of RS, SC and PR. The project strategy foresees: elaboration of diagnoses; monitoring indicators and sustainability indices on an agroecosystem scale; adequacy of the property to legal and regulatory frameworks; and, the adoption of intervention plans based on the incorporation, development and validation of good agricultural practices, in order to strengthen the sustainable use of natural resources and biodiversity. As impacts, it is expected to improve the quality of life and sustainability of the property; the increase in levels of food and nutrition security for farmers; increasing the level of knowledge of producers and technicians linked to tobacco production on issues of environmental quality, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; and finally, replicating the conceptual model to other production chains, sectors and countries, with a strong impact on the image of both institutions.
