Development of ecological restoration techniques and monitoring of environmental indicators in the Permanent Preservation Area of ​​the UHE Sinop reservoir, Mato Grosso

This partnership proposal will seek to implement and monitor experimental units for recomposition of Permanent Preservation Areas (APP in Portuguese) around the UHE Sinop reservoir, watershed of the Teles Pires river, Mato Grosso. With the filling of the reservoir of UHE Sinop, carried out in the first two months of 2019, the entrepreneur (Sinop Energia) was imposed, via condition requested by the environmental agency responsible for inspection, the environmental regularization of the Permanent Preservation Area of the enterprise. It is estimated that this area is approximately 3,400 ha, distributed among the municipalities of Cláudia, Itaúba, Ipiranga do Norte, Sinop and Sorriso and considering a 100m wide recomposition strip. With the aim of enhancing positive actions, avoiding, mitigating or compensating for those of a negative nature that may be caused by the interventions necessary to implement the undertaking and, subsequently, to operate it, Sinop Energia's Basic Environmental Project (PBA) is composed by 33 socio-environmental programs with specific methodologies, scopes, products, responsibilities and schedules, to be managed throughout the Plant's implementation stage, as well as during its operation.

Given the magnitude of this action, considering that the areas to be recomposed are sparse and with different histories, Sinop Energia sought technical-scientific cooperation from Embrapa to build joint actions. Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril sees in this technical cooperation a great possibility to meet the demand for research in APP restoration, since so far it only has lines of research in restoration of Legal Reserves. The technical and logistical support to be provided by the entrepreneur will substantially help in carrying out the activities. Among the objectives to be achieved are: Support the environmental diagnosis of the APP generated after filling the reservoir of UHE Sinop; Propose APP restoration models that include different technologies and strategies; Monitor the experimental units installed to assess the development of ecosystem restoration; Conduct research related to regional native seed technology and; Promote and stimulate the transfer of technology related to the environmental regularization of the APP in the region with the region's owners and technicians.

The partnership now proposed will strengthen research and technology transfer initiatives already in progress and will support new initiatives, now focused on restoring Permanent Preservation Areas, in order to meet the demand of Mato Grosso society for information and actions for environmental regularization of water bodies margins in Mato Grosso. The alignment of the institutions' ongoing actions reveals great potential for cooperation in the proposed project theme, also enhancing the synergy with other actions related to this theme developed by Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril.
