Strengthening Brazilian Traditional Agricultural Systems (SATs)
Strengthening Brazilian Traditional Agricultural Systems (SATs)
The Traditional Agricultural Systems (SATs) are part of Brazil's intangible cultural heritage andconstitute the essence of the lifestyles of numerous rural communities, including familyfarmers, agroextractivists, artisanal fishermen, indigenous peoples, and traditionalcommunities. SATs interconnect knowledge, myths, forms of social organization, practices, products, techniques, and artifacts, along with other manifestations associated with the use ofsociobiodiversity products, forming cultural and agri-food systems that involve spaces, dietarypractices, and agroecosystems managed by traditional peoples and communities and by familyfarmers. Despite the richness and importance of Brazilian and global SATs, there is a growingscenario of threats and risks of impoverishment and even disappearance of theseenvironments, as well as the traditional knowledge associated with them. Therefore, this project aims to implement research, development, and innovation actionsaimed at strengthening Brazilian Traditional Agricultural Systems (SATs) by integrating insitu/on-farm and ex situ conservation initiatives of genetic resources; developing acommunication plan and training courses on the recognition and valorization of agriculturalsystems relevant to the conservation of agrobiodiversity and the food and nutritional securityof family farmers, indigenous peoples, and traditional communities; and promoting theinternational program "Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS/FAO)," with aview to supporting Brazilian nominations for international recognition as agricultural heritageof humanity.
