Canchim and Brangus breeds: research advances for genetic improvement and evaluation

The Brangus-Ibagé and Canchim breeds are important options in beef cattle breeding systems. Developed in Brazil on government farms that are now Embrapa research units (Pecuária Sul and Pecuária Sudeste), these units house the original herds used to characterize animals and provide superior genetic material. The production sector demands improvements in specific areas, including tick and endoparasite resistance, temperament, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, efficient use of inputs (food and water), and fertility in both males and females. However, existing beef cattle genetic improvement programs in Brazil haven't fully incorporated the scattered research on these characteristics. Furthermore, measuring these traits in commercial herds can be complex due to the phenotypic evaluation requirements. This project, conducted at Embrapa Units, aims to address this by evaluating and selecting animals based on both traditional and unconventional criteria (e.g., tick resistance, methane emissions). This will democratize access to superior genetic material for traits that are difficult to measure conventionally. Making genetic material available for these unconventional characteristics will significantly impact the production sector. By improving these traits, particularly through bulls or semen used in breeding systems, producers can expect higher quality animals for slaughter and reduced veterinary treatment and labor costs. This project attends the Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero hunger) and 12 (Responsible consumption and production).
