Strawberry Genetic Improvement Aimed At Better Adaptation, Plague Resistance and Fruit Quality

Enter multiple e-mails separated by comma.

The production of strawberries in Brazil is of great importance and has been experiencing increasing expansion every year. This culture still is of great social importance once great part of productive areas are based in family farming, thus being directly linked to family income, job offer and establishment of manpower in rural economical activities. Despite its importance, many are the technological gaps and few are the research institutions currently involved in strawberry studies. Great part of the national production is based in foreign cultivares, making the productive sector dependant on improvement programs abroad, such as the United States and Spain. This project aims to reestablish a strawberry improvement program, contemplating actions which include the set up of a work collection, agronomical and phytosanitary characterization, whose results should include the development of clones which are better adapted to soil and climate conditions belonging to the different producing regions, and better fruit quality (firmer and with better flavor), and resistant to plagues.
