We can define Rural Cultural Heritage as a set of material and immaterial records arising from the practices, customs and production initiatives that have been historically and geographically established in rural areas. The "Rural Cultural Heritage in São Paulo: A Valuable Place for Research, Education and Tourism" project aimed at providing a set of management, conservation and dissemination tools and methodologies for those responsible for rural cultural heritage, including both owners and the relevant public entities in the area of culture, education and tourism. One of the planned actions was to promote a Rural Inventory of Cultural Heritage in São Paulo, comprising material goods (collections, artwork, furniture, buildings, natural resources, equipment etc) and intangible records (places and living spaces, songs, beliefs, celebrations, knowledge and ways of doing things). This inventory was established in digital form, for use in the conservation management and heritage, educational and touristic promotion. The research was funded by the Foundation for Research Support of the State of São Paulo (FAPESP) and involved thirteen educational and research institutions, including Embrapa, the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC), and the universities located in São Paulo state USP, UNESP and UNICAMP. Embrapa Satellite Monitoring collaborated with the preparation of an updated digital cartographic database of the farms covered by the project and developed a WebGIS system with high-spatial-resolution images from the Worldview and Quickbir satellites, obtained in 2011. Tangible and intangible goods can be included in the geographical information system developed in an online platform, allowing coordinated actions for dissemination, management, and educational and touristic applications. The project also aimed at establishing a collaboration network and ongoing partnership between several research, conservation and protection institutions (owners and foundations) and public administration bodies, and creating mechanisms to motivate the provision of a large collection under the custody of government agencies, with the purpose of stimulating research on the values of São Paulo rural cultural heritage.
