Genetic Improvement of Blackberries and Blueberries
Genetic Improvement of Blackberries and Blueberries
The Brazilian fruit farmer needs new product options which have a commercial appeal in order to maintain themselves in the market. Blueberries and blackberries are a part of these options, they are increasingly awakening the interest of producers due to their nutraceutic properties and usage possibilities. These species can present great production in small areas. Temperate Climate Embrapa has launched the Tupy blackberry cultivar, which is the most used but has thorny stems, hindering the plant's management, especially during harvest and pruning. In order to give great expression to the production of blackberries in Brazil, it is necessary to offer cultivars which ripen at different periods, and thus extending the species' harvesting period. Obtaining fruit producing cultivars which offer similar qualities to the Tupy one, but with a sweeter taste and stems with no thorns, is also a goal to be pursued. Thusly, this project's general goal is to develop blueberry and blackberry cultivars which are adapted to mild winter conditions and spring temperatures, producing sweet-tasting fruits, or with balanced acidity and sweetness and competitive traits in international markets, and which allow to extend the harvesting period.
