In order to have the country keep growing and to open new markets, some sectors still require value aggregation to their products, which can only be achieved through the continuous incorporation of new technologies. In special, the quality and certification of agricultural products, biotechnology, agroenergy, environmental monitoring, new uses of agricultural products, precision agriculture and traceability, the inputs (fertilizers, pesticides) industry, innovation in medicine for veterinary use and in food conservation, and several other sectors related to the agroindustry will inevitably benefit from the advances of nanotechnology. That is the context of the Research Network of Nanotechnology Applied to Agribusiness (AgroNano Network), which is organized and financed by Embrapa and has demonstrated that, by joining capacities and a multidisciplinary performance can give inestimable contributions to the area and provide new possibilities for short and long-term social and economic development. It is aimed to explore the opportunities and evaluate the application of nanotechnology at five priority areas. This research project intends to consolidate the existing Nanotechnology Research Network and make use of the structure of the National Laboratory of Nanotechnology for Agribusiness, set up at Embrapa Instrumentation, the Embrapa unit that coordinates this project, to expand its scope of operations and the development of the applications, attending 158 researchers, 14 Embrapa unities and 39 partners from research institutes to universities.
