Pasture degradation is one of the main problems of Brazilian cattle farming. Several strategies to recover the productivity of degraded pastures have been developed by Embrapa and other research and education institutions. In such studies, reducing the costs of the recovery of degraded pastures has been one of their main focuses. Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) have proved to be some of the best alternatives to reduce the costs of pasture fertilization. ICLS have potential to increase the productivity of grains and of meat and milk while simultaneously reducing the risk of degrading natural resources. The results obtained with ICLS in Cerrado have demonstrated the benefits of this kind of system in agricultural production and in improving physical, chemical and biological soil properties. Moreover, ICLS are extremely interesting as they produce high yields with relatively low risks for businesses. In addition, the higher sustainability in grain farming, for instance, in light of breaking the cycle of pests and diseases and of the improvement to the soil's physical quality, decisively contributes to reducing business risk. ICLS can also contribute to expanding the area cultivated with grains and to increasing animal production without the need to clear new Cerrado areas or more fragile ecosystems, such as the Amazon rainforest. Therefore, ICLS seem to be one of the pathways towards sustainability in agricultural production in the Cerrado region. Therefore, this proposal aims at assessing the potential of integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) as sustainable alternatives in representative agroeconomic regions in the Cerrado and bordering areas, implementing and expanding research activities that will broaden knowledge about the systems, with new crop combinations, including the forest component (ICLFS), and consolidate a sustainability assessment methodology.
