BRS 661 is an open-pollinated, short-cycle forage sorghum variety. It reaches harvesting point around 90 days to 110 days after planting, depending on the region, and has a high regrowth capacity.
It has good drought tolerance and high biomass production potential, exceeding 15 tons of dry matter or 60 tons of green matter per hectare.
It presents quality forage production, with 30% to 40% of tannin-free grains in the forage.
The variety is insensitive to photoperiod, which allows it to be planted in the Northeast of Brazil and in a second season in the Brazilian Central-West.
It is tall, resistant to lodging and tolerant to anthracnose, rust and helminthosporiosis. The cultivar is also tolerant to toxic aluminum in the soil, which makes it convenient for regions with low availability of water.
