The cultivar BRS Gaita was selected as a dual purpose, with a tendency to ethanol production due to its yield and relatively large root size, although it can be used for fresh or animal feed consumption. Sweet potato as an alternative bioenergy source, presents an excellent production of biomas to obtain ethanol fuel, associated with the rusticity. The morphological characteristics were determined through the International Potato Center (Peru) descriptors. The potatoes number average per plant is five. The root shape is wide elliptical, with predominant color of light cream skin and predominant color of the cream also pulp. The results of the chemical evaluations of the cultivar BRS Gaita showed the significant value obtained in the quantification of starch, which is an important factor in the production of ethanol. For this component, an average of 26.50 g / 100 was obtained. The results indicate that sweet potato cultivar BRS Gaita can be used in the biofuels production, considering its characteristics, mainly related to the starch concentration, potatoes large size produced and high yield, however it should not be neglected its use for human and animal consumption.
