BRS Guaraçá: guava tree rootstock

First highly efficient technology to control root-knot nematodes, considered the main challenge in guava cropping in Brazil. The cultivar BRS Guaraçá is a hybrid plant, which combines the characteristics of guava trees ( P. guajava) and Brazilian guava trees ( Psidium guineas), for use as rootstock. The cultivar was developed through breeding and genetic improvement, from crossings of two Psidium species, having a guava accession as mother plant and a Brazilian guava one as father plant. The materials used were selected after the assessment of a hundred genotypes of parasite-resistant Brazilian guava trees collected from North to South of Brazil and also in the Caribbean. The hybrid resulting from this crossing has 50% of the guava genome, minimizing incompatibility with the graft cultivars, among which the low size of the Brazilian guava tree. In the assessment of the graft of BRS Guaraçá with the main commercial guava varieties - "Paluma" and "Pedro Sato" -, no exudations, cracks in the stem of the grafted plants or differences in diameter at the site of the graft were observed, indicating their compatibility. The grafted cultivars produced about 40 tons of fruit per hectare, in harvests carried out 30 months after transplantation, with plant height exceeding two meters.
