Jardim Filtrante
Filter Garden
Photo: HERNANDES, Pedro
It consists of a small, easy-to-maintain, waterproofed pond with rocks, sand and aquatic plants that treats wastewater from sinks, showers and tanks, as it is rich in soaps, detergents, food scraps and fat – the so-called “graywater". It was adapted to complement the use of Biodigester Septic Tanks and the Embrapa Chlorinator, technologies that were developed for rural sanitation.
It contributes to environmental sustainability not only by avoiding the disposal of untreated water, but also by allowing reuse as crop irrigation, to wash floors and windows, in toilet bowls and so on, including suitable disposal. The system also provides harmony in the landscape through the use of ornamental plants.
