    Exchange of biological materials and lab analyses at the Johanna Döbereiner Center of Biological Resources (CRB-JD)

    CRB-JD works as repository of live cells, genomes and associated information for scientific investigation. Some of its roles are: to preserve and supply biological material and associated information for research and scientific development, in the areas of agriculture, health and environment and for industrial applications; research biological material (morphology, physiology, genetics, preservation etc.); conserve biodiversity; promote training; and work as an information center for policy-making and the public in general.

    It runs a microbial gene bank and performs exchanges to enrich the collection through the incorporation of new microorganisms, develop biological inputs and conduct training for scholars and professionals in general, following the example of the training in microbial taxonomy.

  • Milk Quality Analysis

    Analysis of raw milk samples for industries, dairy companies, cooperatives, and farmers, through the Milk Quality Laboratories that integrate the Brazilian Network of Laboratories for Milk Quality Control (RBQL), by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa).

    The results obtained serve different purposes, such as assessing the composition and hygienical quality of milk or the status of subclinical mastitis in the herd, as well as support to the identification of nutritional and handling issues to improve the management of production systems.

    The laboratories perform milk sample analyses to determine the content of fat, protein, lactose, dry extract , defatted dry extract (DDE), somatic cell count (SCC) and total bacteria count (TBC) - Embrapa Dairy Cattle and Temperate Agriculture -, casein and urea nitrogen (only at Embrapa Dairy Cattle)

  • Testing of cattle tick sensitivity to acaricides

    Offered to farmers from all over the country, it determines the most suitable product to fight cattle tick in each property, which contributes to efficient control, savings in funds and labor, decceleration of the process of tick resistance, and lower environmental aggression.

  • Quality Analysis of Soil Fertility Laboratories

    The Program of Quality Analysis of Soil Fertility Laboratories (PAQLF) has the main goal of verifying the quality of soil analysis determinations by laboratories in public and private institutions, in order to ensure the results generated by participating labs and used for the calculation of the amount of fertilization and liming that will be applied by farmers all over Brazil. Every year PAQLF supplies a kit with 12 soil samples to have participating laboratories determine soil fertility, micronutrients and physics.

    The laboratories deemed to be of excellence obtain the right to use the PAQLF's Quality Seal for a year. Such seals are trackable and specific for programs of this nature, as they have security items that hinder their forgery or misuse.

    In addition to quality control, PAQLF also offers technical consultancy for labs that have low score in the interlaboratorial exercise by training lab technicians and/or offering methodologies and any kind of information the institutions require.
