Alfredo Augusto Cunha Alves graduated in Agronomy from the Federal Rural University of Amazon-UFRA (1979); M.Sc. in Plant Physiology by Federal University of Viçosa-UFV (1986) and Ph.D. in Plant Physiology at Cornell University (1998). He is Embrapa?s researcher since 1980 to date. Researcher at Embrapa East Amazon-CPATU, working in Boa Vista-RR, as Coordinator of the Agricultural Research Unit in Roraima-NPAR (1980-1982); Researcher at Embrapa Roraima (1982-1987); Researcher at Embrapa Cassava & Fruits-CNPMF (1987-2009 and 2014 to date); and Senior Scientist at Secretariat of International Affairs-Embrapa/SRI (2009-2014). At Embrapa he also worked as Cassava Team Leader (CNPMF); Coordinator of the Cassava Research National Program; Member of the Internal Technical Committee; Supervisor of Technological Business; Manager of Thematic Unit on management of biotic and abiotic factors; Manager of the agreement between Embrapa and CIMMYT for GCP Projects; Coordinator of International Technical Cooperation; and Member of the Embrapa Programming Manager Committee. Abroad, he worked as Visiting-Scientist (Sabbatical) at International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Cali, Colombia, acting as Coordinator of the Cassava Biotechnology Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (CBN) (2003-2004); Senior Scientist at Embrapa Labex-USA in the area of Genetic Resources, working at National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP/ARS/USDA), Fort Collins, Colorado (2009-2012); Member of Program Advisory Committee (PAC) of the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas-CRP/RTB (2014); and currently is Member of RTB Independent Steering Committee (ISC). He has experience in Agronomy, with emphasis on Plant Physiology, acting on the following topics: abiotic stresses tolerance (particularly drought), biotechnology (molecular markers, tissue culture and cryopreservation), genetic resources and pre-breeding of cassava.
