Mini-curriculum
Elibio Rech earned a Bachelor's degree in Agronomic Engineering from the University of Brasilia, Brasília, Federal District, in 1980, with the final project entitled: Socio-economic study of the Cerrado agriculture. He obtained the Master's degree (MSc.) In Phytopathology from the University of Brasilia, in 1983, with the dissertation: Antagonistic effect of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas spp. and Trichoderma harzianum to phytopathogenic fungi. In 1989, he obtained a PhD in Life Sciences from the University of Nottingham, Nottingham, England, with the dissertation: Electric fields and Agrobacteria for gene transfer into plants. He completed postdoctoral studies in 1990 at the University of Nottingham / Oxford in England on the manipulation of yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs), part of the human genome project. Dr. Elibio Rech created and leads a research group, which is currently a national and international reference in the expression of heterologous proteins in plants and animals. It studies the expression of biomolecules of pharmaceutical and industrial value in plants, animals and microorganisms. It studies the processes of integration and expression of regulatory sequences in genomes. It studies the genome of glands that produce spider silk and the production of new materials. It studies the impacts associated with global agriculture and evaluation of the interface of Science and social and economic objectives. It studies the evolution and application of science to the development of processes and products through the manipulation of recombinant DNA technology. He has been actively involved in different segments of the Federal Government on the issue of law-making, biosafety activities and Science and Technology policies. Demonstrated the technological capacity of the Agrarian Sciences area installed in Brazil, to contribute effectively to the solution of problems associated with social and economic demands, through the development of the first transgenic soybean and bean plants containing genes of interest, and a technological platform for the production of transgenic cattle (*). Developed different patented processes. He was Coordinator of the Area of Molecular Biology of EMBRAPA Genetic Resources and Biotechnology. He made scientific and business visits to the main universities and research institutions of the United States, Canada and Europe. He carried out an expedition of germplasm collection in the Amazon. He was a member of the PADCT Technical Group during two administrations (1992 to 1996). He was Vice-president of the Brazilian Society of Genetics, in the management 2000-2002. He was awarded the EMBRAPA Prize for excellence in 1997, the Governor of the State of São Paulo Award, Brazilian Invention, having obtained the 1st place and the Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 2002. He has actively participated in conferences and interviews, through the main media, on the importance of the evolution of Science and knowledge in the development of society. He is Professor of the Master's Degree in Biotechnology at the Universidade Católica de Brasília since 1991, and is Professor of the Master's Degree in Biotechnology at the Universidade Católica de Brasília since 2000; He is a consultant to the main research promotion agencies in the country, and to different national and international scientific journals. Member of the Genetic Heritage Council - MMA. Current Director of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology - Synthetic Biology. (*) Processes developed: Patents (used for product development in Brazil and abroad): 1) A process for obtaining transgenic legume plants (Leguminosae) containing exogenous DNA .; 2) Spider web proteins Nephilengys cruentata, Avicularia juruensis and Parawixia bistriata isolated from Brazilian biodiversity.
