Alfredo José Barreto Luiz, born in Taubaté, SP, studied electronics at the Dr. Alfredo José Balbi School, or UNITAU College, from 1978 to 1980; he holds a degree in agricultural engineering from the Federal University of Lavras, MG - UFLa/1985; a master's degree in statistics and quantitative methods from the University of Brasília - UnB/1995; a doctorate in remote sensing from the National Institute for Space Research - INPE/2003, and a post-doctorate in remote sensing from the same institute in 2010. As a teenager, he worked as an office boy at FITEJUTA, in Taubaté. He began his professional career as a quality and research supervisor at a feed factory owned by Anderson Clayton, in São Paulo - SP, but soon moved to Dourados, MS, where he worked as a researcher in the area of #8203;#8203;genetic improvement and management of cereals and oilseeds at the Cotia Agricultural Cooperative. He joined Embrapa Cerrados in Planaltina, DF, through a public selection process in 1990 to work as a researcher in the area of #8203;#8203;Statistics. At the end of 1995, he transferred to Embrapa Meio Ambiente in Jaguariúna, SP, where he held the position of Manager of the Corporate Communications Area from 1996 to 1998. He took on the role of Advisor to the President of Embrapa in Brasília, DF, in December 2003 and left it in March 2005. Back at Embrapa Meio Ambiente, he took on the role of Deputy Head of Research and Development from December 2006 to April 2008. He is currently a researcher at Embrapa Meio Ambiente. He is the author of several technical and scientific papers on agriculture, published in books, scientific journals, conference proceedings and media outlets. Among his main achievements, we highlight his participation in the books Economics of the environment: theory, policies and management of regional spaces, published by Embrapa and UNICAMP in 1997; Geographic Information System: Applications in Agriculture, published by Embrapa Cerrados in 1998; Agro-environmental Impact: perspectives, problems and priorities, published by Edgar Blücher in 1999, which received the Jabuti Award 2000; Global Climate Change and Brazilian Agriculture, published by Embrapa Environment in 2001; and Environmental Impact of Irrigated Agriculture in Guaíra, SP, published by Embrapa Meio Ambiente in 2006. He served as editor of the book Computational Methods for Agricultural Research: Advances and Applications, published by Hershey, New York, in 2011. He also collaborated in the preparation of the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, which resulted in the publication of the Initial National Communication of Brazil to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, published by the MCT in 2004. His main area of #8203;#8203;activity is the study of agricultural scenarios and dynamics in Brazil and in carrying out statistical and quantitative analyses of data from agricultural research.
