Mini-curriculum
Roberto Porro is Brazilian, and holds a degree in Agronomical Engineering from the University of São Paulo (1984). After working for a decade as a practitioner with smallholders in the eastern Amazon (1986-1994), he attended a program in public policy at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas (1994-1995), and then earned a M.A. at University of Floridas Tropical Conservation and Development Program (1995-1997). Subsequently he obtained a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology (UF, 1998-2002). He is currently a researcher at Embrapa Eastern Amazon, where he coordinates studies on rural anthropology with an emphasis on peasantry, land use and environment in the Amazon, economic stratification, agroextractivism and community forest management. He is a permanent faculty of the Postgraduate Program - Master and Doctorate in Family Farming, at the Amazon Institute of Family Agricultures, Federal University of Pará. He worked as a senior researcher at the World Agroforestry Center, Icraf (2003-2011), acting as regional coordinator for Latin America, as well as Executive Secretary of the Amazon Initiative Consortium for Conservation and Rational Use of Natural Resources. He has experience in action research with peasant organizations in Maranhão and Pará states. He published and organized books, and is the first author of several articles in national and international indexed journals.
