Dr. Giovani G. Brito is an accomplished plant scientist with a Ph.D. in Molecular Plant Physiology from the prestigious Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), MG, Brazil. His research has been instrumental in bridging molecular physiology with genetic inheritance studies, particularly in the development and validation of molecular markers for coffee rust resistancea disease that threatens thousands of hectares of coffee plantations worldwide. His work, funded by the Coffee Genome Project in collaboration with Embrapa Café, FAPESP, and the Coffee Research Consortium, led to the first recorded molecular markers in Timor hybrids flanking the rust resistance gene. These discoveries have laid the groundwork for marker-assisted selection in breeding programs, significantly advancing disease resistance strategies.Since joining Embrapa as a scientific researcher in 2007, Dr. Brito has spearheaded cutting-edge projects integrating plant physiology and non-invasive phenotyping tools.
